Most normal computer users require a pretty hefty amount of storage space for their normal, everyday activities, and in order to enjoy that space, they generally purchase HDDs providing large storage capacities. Nevertheless, such HDDs don't really deliver high access speeds,
SSDs being a lot more useful for this purpose.
However, the people over at SilverStone have come up with a very interesting solution, which combines the speed of an SSD with the storage capacity of an HDD. The device in question is called the HDDBOOST and combines the best qualities of traditional hard drives and solid state disks (SSD) into one virtual super storage solution. Moreover, the minimum SSD data write times help extend the SSD lifecycle even further.
According to the manufacturer, depending on the features of the
SSD unit used within this assembly, the HDDs’ performance might increase by as much as 70 percent, which is indeed something even a normal computer user will immediately notice. Of course, only practical tests will prove whether these claims are true or not, but this surely sounds good.
The HDDBOOST supports
3.5-inch HDDs, as well as 2.5-inch SATA SSDs. The enclosure measures 130.5mm x 101.6mm x 25.4mm and weighs around 160 grams, while the list of available connectivity options is also pretty interesting, since we're talking about 1 x 7 pin SATA connector to motherboard, 1 x 7 +15 pin SATA + Power connector to system hard drive and power plus 1 x USB connector (for firmware upgrades only).
For the time being, the HDDBOOST from SilverStone is only available on the Japanese market. However, it would seem that it will also become available in Europe later on this month, the estimated price point being set at just around 37 Euro, which is not bad at all, given the performance boost this thing should be able to provide.
