Patient simulators are some of the best ways through which a medicine student can receive proper training before the actual work with real patients. The scenarios can include the moment of the patient’s injury, patient transportation and, of course, the medical treatment simulation. In the recent years, the technology used in this field has made some amazing progresses from the plastic dummy that was used for CPR training only.

Laerdal Medical, the Norwegian producer of the now famous Resusci Anne CPR training simulator, has recently unveiled a breakthrough product, dubbed SimMan 3G. This a much more advanced version of the previous simulator, with features that no one would have imagined a few years back.

Thus, the SimMan 3G can cry, bleed, convulse, go into cardiac arrest and so on. Imagine what an experience this will be for medicine freshmen when they first meet SimMan. Although it has a very practical use, the thing that concerns me is that they could have made it look less creepy. The body was very accurately designed, but the Simulator's face resembles more to a skeleton than a human. Oh, and it also comes “equipped” with a permanently open mouth, that just gives the impression that SimMan is screaming “Help! Some clumsy med student is abusing me!”

However, this is the best training one could get for treating certain medical conditions that are recommended to be practiced at first without a human subject. For example, SimMan features a technology that measures the quality of CPR and provides real time feedback on compression rate, depth, release, etc. It can also simulate minor to full effect convulsions and bleed from an internal reservoir through wound models.

The eyes are programmed to weep as a reaction to chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear virtual agents. But the most amazing feature is its blinking according to the light; it can even wink. I'm curious to see the female students' reaction to getting winked at by the gorgeous
SimMan 3G.

For other info on what the students can perform on SimMan, you can head to the product page, where you can find an enormous list of SimMan technical specifications.
