We rarely get to present you gadgets that are used to improve weapons, but every time a new military invention comes out, it is always a pleasure to write about. Like Matthew Hagerty's Invention Award winner SmartSight gun-cam system, for example, which is said to allow soldiers to see around corners, whenever in the middle of this battle scenario.
"Fifty percent of kills happen on the corners,” the inventor said, which makes his creation a very useful addition to the equipment of any soldier out there fighting for their country.
Popsci also tells us that the wireless
camera system has been in the making for ten years now and its inventor is still working on perfecting his solution.
How Matthew's invention works is with help from hardware found in news broadcasting equipment. This has been minimized in order for the gimmick to be light and easily fitted onto today's weapons. SmartSight weighs 1.5 pounds for now, the wearable computer can be attached on a combat suit without any trouble and the thumbnail-sized color head-up display comfortably sits on the pair of protective glasses that
troops usually wear.
SmartSight is able to wirelessly stream live, uncompressed video onto the HUD at 30 frames per second. Through a custom software, the red target dot is also overlayed on the head-up
wearable display, in real time. This way, soldiers can act as if they saw their targets through the weapon's conventional scope.
In the picture, you can see it mounted on an M4 or .308 SOCOM carbine and notice that it is practically like a vision extension, which will help soldiers determine whether there are enemies waiting for them around the corner, instead of just walking unprepared in the line of fire. This way, the military troops using SmartSight will gain a huge advantage on the battle grounds.
We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit. The address is
