The article regarding
low-power HDMI hasn't even cooled yet and... here's another hot piece regarding the upcoming HDMI 1.4 Specification. It seems this latest HDMI version will be brimming with new enhanced technologies to bring more joy to HDMI-using... users around the world. Continue reading for more interesting details about the future of HDMI.
HDMI seems to be turning a lot into what USB has become, a universal connector trying to replace all other connectors out there. Why am I saying that? Well, mainly because the 1.4 version will be adding a data channel to the HDMI cable, allowing two-way high-speed (100 Mb/s Ethernet, to be more exact) transfer of data between an HDMI Internet-enabled device and other HDMI devices. That means you'll be virtually sharing your Internet connection like you do in case of an Ethernet network. Trying to replace Ethernet ports?
Another cool feature is the Audio Return Channel, allowing the HDMI device to send and receive audio signals without the need for extra cables. Perhaps the most important upgrade in the new version (I mean... more important than the rest of the important upgrades) is the fact that HDMI 1.4 will allow for beyond 1080p HD resolutions. That means we'll be able to ante the resolution to 3840 x 2160 (24Hz/ 25Hz/ 30Hz) or should we choose to go even beyond that, 4096 x 2160 at a 24Hz refresh speed.
Expanded support for color spaces will allow the HDMI device to display more vivid colors when connected to a digital still camera. You will also be able to view 3D data, with home 3D systems being allowed up to 1080p dual-stream resolution.
Two different connectors will also be specified, one being a new Micro HDMI connector that is supposed to be 50% smaller than the existing HDMI Mini Connector and also an Automotive Connection System for in-vehicle HD distribution (giving reckless drivers an extra reason to be… reckless).
If HDMI and USB keep this up, soon all we'll need for our computer will be a USB and HDMI cable, which I wouldn't mind at all
