Green energy is one of the hottest subjects today, everybody trying their best to contribute to the reinvention of the relationship between people and nature. Whether about finding alternative energy supplies or replacing toxic materials to eco-friendly ones, it's clear that the keyword of these times is “green.”
Eco-friendly battery rechargers fall under the same category and one of the most interesting devices of this type is the Solar Pot recharger, which, just like its name suggests, takes the form of a flower pot and recharges batteries by using solar power.
Discharged dry cells are a serious environmental threat with all those toxic electricity-producing chemicals inside them. But the importance of dry cells in today’s electronic gadgets can’t be ruled out. Rechargeable batteries do help in saving the precious resources of the environment, but again they need electricity to keep them juiced up, which, again, is not always an eco-resource. However, designer Jangho Kim has tried to solve this problem and develop a feasible solution in the form of a product he calls the Solar Pot.
Just like in a normal pot you plant some seeds and wait for the Sun to do its job and nourish the plant, the Solar Pot encourages users to plant a discharged battery and keep the pot in the Sun. The Sun doesn’t nourish a baby battery tree, but recharges it making it fit for reuse. A small LED light glows when the batteries are sufficiently charged and can be used again.
Unfortunately, there are a few major drawbacks to this device. Firstly, it would just be able to recharge rechargeable batteries, but disposable cells, which are more in use, will still have the same fate. Secondly, the Solar Pot is still only a concept, so we will have to wait and see whether it will ever become reality.
We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there.
