Although there's a huge amount of PMPs being sold right now, new additions are always welcome, since media players usually come with interesting innovations so as to try and steal some of the competition's customers. Most of today's PMPs try to be as small and cute and cuddly as possible, ignoring the fact that such a gadget must be a media player first and anything else second.
That's what the Sonix7 Media Pro tries to do: return to the origins of the PMP by exploiting the things that other PMPs, such as the Apple iPod nano lack or fail to achieve successfully. It has a 3.2-inch TFT screen with touchscreen controls, a digital camera, works as an e-book reader, can play games, has a built-in speaker, an accelerometer and supports a number of widely used audio file formats (MP1, MP2, MP3, WAV, ACC, MIDI, WMA) or video formats (MP4, MPEG-4, AVI, XVID or H263).
But the best thing is that it is manufactured in the United Kingdom and not in China. I don't know what marketing genius told Sonix7 to promote its Media Pro with a phrase like “undercuts and outperforms competing players made in China” but I can tell you that phrase alone makes me turn my back on it. While I agree most China-made devices (PMPs included) are of poor quality, there are some that actually excel in their practicability and design.
Judging a device by the name of the country that manufactures it is like judging a person by their nationality or color, which, as you know, is not cool and, more importantly, not permitted. Anyway, let us see what Morris Ahmed, MD of Sonix7, has to say, OK?
“The Sonix7 Media Pro is designed to be as user-friendly and practical as possible, with a big screen, long battery life and easy touch-screen controls […] It also has a host of extras, such as a camera and built-in speaker, which make it even more versatile. […] Value for money is what people demand in today’s economy. We wanted to give an easy-to-use player with as many features as possible for the lowest possible price.”
All in all, the device seems to be able to take on the best of them. Out of principle however, I cannot recommend it.
We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there.
