Realizing the huge potential represented by e-books and e-book readers, Sony has made quite a few developments in this field, in an attempt to take away some of the market share from Amazon's Kindle and Kindle DX e-readers. And while the former's previous offerings were designed specifically as “Kindle Killers,” its latest portable e-reader, the Daily Edition, seems to go directly after the Kindle DX's throat.

So, the most important feature provided by this new Sony reader is the fact that it gives consumers wireless access via AT&T’s 3G mobile broadband network to Sony’s eBook store from just about anywhere in the U.S, allowing book aficionados to browse, purchase and download books, as well as select newspapers and magazines when and where they want. There are no monthly fees or transaction charges for the basic wireless connectivity and users still have the option to side load personal documents or content from other compatible sites via USB.

Similar to the other Sony readers already available on the market, the new device comes equipped with an E Ink Vizplex electronic paper display that emulates the look of ink on paper. We're talking about a 7-inch wide touch screen (2 inches smaller than that of the Kindle DX) that provides intuitive navigation and comfortable layout of content, including newspapers and magazines, whether you’re reading in portrait or landscape orientation.

In portrait mode, about 30-35 lines of text are visible, making the experience very similar to that of a printed paperback book. A high contrast ratio with 16 levels of grayscale ensures that text and images are crisp and easy to read.

Furthermore, the Daily Edition boasts an attractive aluminum body with an integrated cover for durability and has enough internal memory to hold more than one thousand standard eBooks and expansion slots for memory cards (to hold even more).

“We firmly believe consumers should have choice in every aspect of their digital reading experience,” said Steve Haber, president of Sony’s Digital Reading Business Division. “Today, we take another large stride to deliver on that promise. We now have the most affordable devices on the market, the greatest access to free and affordable eBooks through The eBook Store from Sony and our affiliated ecosystem, and now round out our Reader offering with a wireless device that lets consumer purchase and download content on the go.”

The new Sony Reader Daily Edition sells for around 400 US dollars, which is quite a competitive price point, especially taking into account the fact that the Kindle DX, the Daily Edition's main rival, sells for US$90 more.

I have been pulling out my hair on this - I am a CPA and also a law school student - I need an ereader, because the texts that I read are just too big, and I travel alot. I backed away from the Sony Daily Edition for a while, as I got caught up in the glare issue, but all of these items have glare, and you just have to tilt a bit, and it goes away.

Also, Sony give access to the vast network of US Public Library networks, and that represents a colossal databank of literature to read and study. Initially, I did not like the shape of the Sony Screen (7.1", but only because it is longer, so it is really the same width as a 6" screen - very cute of Sony). I wanted to check out the IREX DR800SG, but it looks like it will never be released, and it is already 2 months late.

The Plastic Logic Que is compelling, but way too expensive, and quite large for a commuter.

So, I am going to buy the Sony tonight, online to save shipping and taxes. If it doesn't work out, that is what we have eBay for. But I did check it out extensively in stores (J&R in NYC and a store in NJ) and it is really a beautiful, well built device (Sony is noted for build quality).

Contact me anytime - this is still not a perfect technology, but it is getting better, and it is impossible to wait for the perfect solution, so go for it.....
