If there's one thing I can definitely say about Sony Ericsson is that it has learned its lesson. It seems it has finally understood that in order to actually compete with the big boys (in this case, only Nokia), you need a device that will make users want to buy it. Up until now, everyone can admit that it wasn't much of a competitor for the number one mobile manufacturer title.
That being said, here is its new flagship handheld - Satio. This fresh gadget is a high-end smartphone and proud member of the “Entertainment Unlimited” series. Though initially presented under the codename Idou, Sony Ericsson decided Satio would sound better... and it does. It comes in black, silver and bordeaux (reddish).
The Satio will support a broad range of networks (GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 and UMTS/HSPA 900/2100), has a 3.5-inch 360 x 640 pixel TFT touchscreen, microSD support, and will come with an included 8GB memory card. Since this device is more multimedia oriented, you're going to want a good camera. Thankfully, it has a 12.1-megapixel camera with touch focus and Xenon flash.
It weighs just 126 grams, it is 112 x 55 x 13 mm in size, and has the Symbian S60 5th edition open-source operating system, meaning that the user can customize his or her very own application for the phone. I have to admit this handheld has really attractive features and does look like a multimedia edition smartphone. It launches in October but pricing has yet to be announced.
There aren't many bad things to be said about the device (at least, not for now) except for the fact that it has a pretty “uncool” looking bulge where the camera is positioned (see the pictures). It may make those of us with an eye for the aesthetic.... feel uneasy about purchasing it.
We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed.
