Up until now, we’ve been able to go through quite a large number of
rumors regarding a possible upcoming, slimmer version of Sony’s already famous PS3 gaming console, a move that made quite a lot of sense, especially since Sony applied the same tactics with its previous iteration, the PS2 model. And , sure enough, at Gamescom 2009, Sony did not disappoint the large crowd gathered for its press event, by officially introducing the significantly slimmer and more attractive
PS3 Slim.
While information is still scarce for the time being (and we’ll promise to bring you an update as soon as Sony decides to let some more tech details slip through its official channels), what we’re dealing with here is a significantly smaller video game console, the overall volume of the “older” PS3 being cut by around 33 percent.
Moreover, besides cutting the size, the technological improvements found in this new PS3 also make it a lot more energy efficient, the device requiring around 34 less power during normal operation, without its level of performance being significantly affected.
Another major thing worth mentioning is the fact that pricing has been reduced as well, the new gaming console retailing for around either 300 Euro or 300 US dollars, depending on which part of the world you’re in, when it finally arrives in stores in September. Plus, the same price cut (100 Euro or 100 USD) will be applied to all existing PS3s, which is indeed a good piece of news for gamers from all around the world.
Besides the PS3 Slim,
Sony’s presser at Gamescom also brought about some other novelties. For example, an interesting tidbit of information is that the European PSN (PlayStation Network) is finally going to catch up (or planning to at least) to the US version. We'll be getting our very own video download service, not to mention VidZone (coming to several European countries).
Another thing that gamers have always wanted is the possibility to read comics on their PlayStation Portable. Guess what is coming this December, ladies and gents: the Digital Reader for the PSP, with comics such as Spider-Man, X-Men and the Fantastic Four being made available from the start. You'll be able to download them directly to the PSP and I have to admit the Digital Reader interface is deadly... in a good way!
A lot of bundled PSP offers will be made available, the PSP-3000 receiving turquoise green, blossom pink and lilac purple coloring. The green-themed PSP will be coming bundled with Little Big Planet PSP, it seems.
That’s it for now, but we promise to come back as soon as possible with more detailed information on the new PS3 slim and the other announcements from Gamescom.
