Although Sony kind of missed the portable multimedia player train a few years ago (when the iPod was born), the truth of the matter is that the Japanese company is trying to make up for the lost time and is working hard at developing new and improved
Walkman PMPs, which seem to be hitting the market at a phenomenal rate.
And the latest such portable players, the NW-A840 Series, manage to once again steal the spotlight, given the fact that, at 7.2-mm, they're by far the thinnest Walkman models Sony has ever launched. The other dimensions also paint the picture of very portable, lightweight devices, since these things measure 104.9 mm in height and 46.8 across, while the weight is of a mere 62 grams. Plus, they feature an
OLED display (240x400 pixel resolution, 2.8-inch size), which, as we all know, allows users to enjoy quite a good multimedia experience while being on the go.
The new family of products includes three models, namely NW-A847, NW-A846 and NW-A845, the only important factor differentiating them being the amount of available storage space, which ranges from 16GB in the case of the NW-A845 up to a whopping 64GB in the case of the NW-A847.
As expected, the file compatibility list is a very extensive one, including MP3, WMA 2, ATRAC, ATRAC Advanced Lossless, Linear PCM, AAC, HE-AAC audio files, MPEG-4, AVC (H.264/AVC) and WMV video files, as well as photos and podcasts. Plus, in case users get bored with their music, the Walkman PMPs sport a built-in FM receiver.
The NW-A840
Walkman Series is powered by built-in rechargeable lithium ion batteries, which provide a maximum functioning life of around 29 hours (when playing music) or 9 hours (when playing video).
All of the three new OLED Walkman PMPs are scheduled to become available in stores at some point in early November (just in Japan for now, sadly), with prices ranging between $263 and 439 US dollars, depending on the storage capacity.
