To be perfectly honest, we weren't aware of the fact that Sony had an interest in the field of portable power supplies. Sure, we do know that they're a serious battery manufacturer, but didn't really expect them to come up with such a product, although it was probably within their power all along to do so.

However, that's exactly what the Japanese company did with their USB Portable Power Supply Adaptor, which acts as one power source for a wide range of USB chargeable portable devices including mobile phones, Walkman players, iPod, music players and games consoles. The reason why Sony's portable power source is compatible with such an extensive range of products is related to the fact that it is equipped with USB Authentication software, which allows instant charging with a huge range of USB chargeable devices.

According to Sony, their Adaptor, released earlier this year on various Asian markets, features a dual module design with an input for charging and a detachable portable power supply with an embedded Li-Ion rechargeable battery. When required, users can plug in to the Portable Power Supply for a recharge from the mains (AC) supply. Alternatively, they can employ the detachable Power Supply module as a power source in its own right, but they do require the original USB cable supplied with the phone, music player or games console.

The Japanese company's statement also says that “the USB Portable Power Supply Adaptor draws on Sony’s technological lead in the field of Li-Ion Polymer rechargeable batteries and is the first mobile power solution from the new Cycle Energy product family.”

Unfortunately, the maker has refrained from providing any pricing and/or availability details regarding its brand-new USB Portable Power Supply Adaptor, but we sure hope to find out more on this issue in the coming months, as this thing gets rolled out on more and more local European markets.
