Rumor has it that Sony is finally thinking of giving the PS3 a shiny new (and lighter) price tag. In an alleged company briefing David Reeves, Sony's European representative, has informed the staff that the PS3 will be "getting more competitive in price". The new price is scheduled to debut sometime in March 2009 with the release of Killzone 2, the console's flagship first person shooter. This duo is expected raise the PS3 sales to a more realistic level competition between the next-gen consoles.
PS3 hunters should take this with a grain of salt since there is no mention of the rumored price cut. Also, there is no indication that the price cut will reach North America or Japan users. While on some continents the PS3 enjoys steady sales figure, it is commonly known that it has been having difficulties (to say the least) competing with the Wii and Xbox 360 on US soil. Its high price next to the 360 and the Nintendo competitor won't do much for sales this holiday season.
Sony doesn't exactly deny these rumors, but again it doesn't confirm them either. Somehow I think it this isn't a really wise decision for the company's profits. It won't certainly raise holiday sales, but, instead, it could actually even dampen them a bit, since those who might have bought a PS3 will now reconsider waiting for the price drop, and if the rumor won't materialize sometime in March 2009, I reckon potential buyers will be disappointed.
The company also needs to enhance its exclusive title library. While games like MGS 4 and Little Big Planet are solid titles, they aren't really that impressive to save the console in this current generation war. I said “current”generation instead of next-gen, because let's face it, there's nothing special anymore about the PS3 and the 360. They were still hot stuff one year ago, but now they are in fact current gen devices. Especially considering that PC graphic cards have even begun to out-pace the console versions.
However, you shouldn't really be disappointed. Although those of you wishing for a PS3 this holiday season will still brake Santa's wallet, I'm sure Sony will offer him some kind of promotional Santa-only deal.
