Since E3 has just started in Los Angeles, we were pretty much expecting some interesting announcements from all three major gaming console manufacturers. And after seeing the new, redesigned Xbox 360 and Nintendo's 3DS, it's time to talk about what Sony Computer Entertainment brought to the party, namely the Move motion controller (or their own Wiimote, if you please).
OK, OK, it's not really fair to compare the Wiimote with Sony's brand-new
Move motion controller, since the functioning principle is fairly different, but we can't help noticing the similarities. And this coming from a company, which looked down on Nintendo's Wii, considering the whole motion sensing thing a waste of time, only a couple of years ago.
But let's leave the comments aside and move back to the controller itself. So, the Move (which had also been
known as the Arc for a few brief moments a while ago) is described as a navigation controller that can be used alongside the motion controller for intuitive navigation of in-game characters and objects. The controller packs advanced motion sensors that precisely track both fast and subtle movements, but works together with the PlayStationEye USB Camera in order to track even more accurately the gamer's movements.
The Move motion controller also packs a sphere that uses internal RGB LED to provide visual feedback, while vibration feedback is felt during specific actions. The controller sports DUALSHOCK 3 action buttons for advanced gaming, uses Bluetooth technology for wireless gaming and is powered by a rechargeable Li-Ion battery.
And since we've reached this topic, we'll have to mention that Sony released a couple of accessories for the Move, namely the PlayStation Move charging station and the PlayStation Move shooting attachment.
By utilizing the "charging station," users will be able to charge up to two PlayStation Move controllers, motion controller or the navigation controller at once without having to connect them to the PS3 system. The "charging station" will become available concurrently with the motion controller launch in each region at an RRP of euro 29.99, US$29.99 and 2,480 yen (including tax), respectively.
The "shooting attachment," designed to place the
PlayStation Move motion controller horizontally, will allow players to hold it as if they were holding a gun and to easily aim at an in-game target. The trigger on the attachment is interlocked with the motion controller T button and will enable users to intuitively play the game, not only limited to shooting games but also on those that may require precise button input and control. It will deliver immersive gameplay and work perfectly with titles like The Shoot! by SCE and Time Crises: Razing Storm by Bandai Namco Games Inc. expected to support the attachment. The "shooting attachment" will become available starting this fall in each region at an RRP of euro 14.99, US$19.99 and 1,480 yen (including tax), respectively.
Sony Computer Entertainment revealed the fact that the PlayStationMove motion controller would be released officially on September 15, 2010 in Europe/PAL territories and in Asian countries/regions at a recommended retail price (RRP) of Euro 39.99. It will also become available in North America on September 19 at an RRP of $49.99 and in Japan on October 21 at an RRP of 3,980 yen (including tax). Naturally, the company has also prepared countless bundles, including games and various accessories, and will probably out even more such packages during Christmas time.
