Since the PMA event is approaching quite fast, you should hold on for quite a large number of digital photography-related announcements over the next couple of days. And, sure enough, that's exactly what we'll talk about as follows, namely the three new models presented by Sony in its W Series, the Cyber-shot W290, W270 and W230.
The new Cyber-shots are designed for those amateur photographers who are looking for devices that will complement their own personal style, besides providing good quality images. For this reason, the Cyber-shot W series is available in a choice of eye-catching colors, at the same time packing quite a “photographic punch” and featuring some very user-friendly functions and features.
The first two new models from the W series are the W290 and W270. Both of these compact digital cameras provide a 5x optical zoom range and 28mm wide angle, the Carl Zeiss lens delivering enhanced shooting capabilities. Additionally, they feature a BIONZ image processor for low-noise 12.1-megapixel images, plus responsive shooting performance. Coupled with high sensitivity (ISO3200), Optical SteadyShot reduces the effects of camera shake when one is shooting handheld, especially at dusk or in dimly-lit interiors.
Other interesting features provided by these two cameras are Enhanced Face Detection and Smile Shutter, as well as the capability of recording 720p HD video clips and stereo sound. They also sport an Intelligent Auto mode that takes care of optimizing camera settings to suit any scene. The main difference between the two cameras is the display, the W290 featuring a 3.0-inch Clear Photo LCD Plus screen.
Besides the two models we've already talked about, the W series includes the W230 version. This compact digital camera is available in several color options (silver, black, red, blue) and features a 12.1-megapixel resolution, complemented by a 4x optical zoom lens, Optical SteadyShot and a large 3.0-inch Clear Photo LCD Plus screen.
While no price points have been indicated, Sony did mention the fact that both the W290 and W270 would be available starting mid-March 2009, and the W230 in mid-April.
