Uuu, techy!

And here we go again, with yet another storage array from none other than Sun Microsystems. It seems that Sun has become quite the little ant these days and has been churning up devices like there's no tomorrow. But luckily, Sun Microsystems also has quite a reputation for making above average devices. Reason enough to check out its brand new Sun Storage 6180 Array? Yup, most definitely, my friends!

The new 6180 storage array represents what Sun deems the culmination of 30 years worth of experience. It offers 50 percent more performance than what Sun currently considers its best offer and uses fewer drives. Thus, a lot lower acquisition cost, as well as pretty low support and operational costs. And we all know that nowadays money well spent means a step further away from impending bankruptcy.

“With 30 years of modular storage as its foundation, Sun has built a rich history of delivering high-performance archive solutions to customers,” said Jason Schaffer, senior director, Storage, Sun Microsystems, Inc. “The new Sun Storage 6180 array leverages this storage innovation and seamlessly integrates across the Sun Storage 6000 family, again topping competitors with a rock-solid storage platform.”

The device has a data cache of 4GB, supports RAID 0, 1, 3, 5, 6 and 10, and up to 128 storage domains. As far as storage capacity goes, the eight host-port version is able to amount a total of 224TB of storage. As far as pricing goes, don't expect it to be anywhere near the definition of “cheap” seeing how the starting price... starts at 32.895 USD. However, if you are thinking about acquiring it, price is probably not something you were ever concerned about. Which reminds me, I need to buy myself a new external drive. It ain't the Sun Storage 6180 Array but, hey, it will do!
