I wonder whether, at the outset of the study that I am about to present to you, the guys and girls at Frost & Sullivan actually thought that another answer might exist than the obvious one that was once again confirmed. Nokia is, according to their study, the number one choice for mobile navigation in Europe and Russia. Seeing how Nokia is the “number one mobile” anything in the world, it doesn't come as such a shock.
Anyway, according to Frost and Sullivan, GPS-enabled devices are expected to reach the huge number of 80 million by 2010 in Europe, while in Russia, the market for such devices grew beyond 300,000 units. The study was conducted on 3,119 persons in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and Benelux, as well as on 600 other persons in Russia.
N. Praveen Chandrasekar, programme manager, telematics and infotainment, Frost & Sullivan, stated that “Nokia has clearly excelled in identifying growth opportunities in a maturing mobile handset market by integrating GPS in a large number of its handsets, making them navigation-ready. With a target of enabling a majority of its new devices with the GPS feature by 2010, coupled with the acquisition of mapping and software companies like NAVTEQ and gate5, the company is clearly building a strong presence in the mobile navigation markets in Europe and elsewhere.”
It seems 62 percent of European non-owners of navigation systems consider Nokia to be the leading brand. 77 percent of the interviewed Russians share their views as well. Add to this the fact that over 72 percent of current European users and 81 percent of Russian users vote Nokia as the best brand when it comes to delivering mobile navigation and you can see why it is the number one mobile phone (including smartphone) manufacturer in the world.
