The advancement of modern technology has also led to some serious improvements attained in the field of security and surveillance solutions, including here the development of wireless systems that can prove to be significantly more versatile than their classic, wired counterparts. And that's exactly the case with the latest device from Swann Security, namely the ADW-400 Digital Guardian Camera & Recorder, which pairs a high-resolution wireless camera with a sleek digital recorder that creates an advanced and completely secure DIY home surveillance solution.

The system features a high resolution color camera that records in 300 TV Lines of resolution, while also providing a Night Vision distance of 26 inches via 24 Infra-red LEDs. Furthermore, the camera sports a motion detection system that automatically triggers recording whenever events occur, while the built-in microphone is capable of recording audio on a radius of up to 9 feet.

The DVR, on the other hand, is capable of recording over three hours of continuous footage on 2GB SD card, and supports up to 32GB SD cards capable of recording 48 hours of continuous footage. Furthermore, the DVR controls are conveniently located on top of DVR for easy navigation, and the device will easily connect to a TV via Composite & RCA outputs. The surveillance videos are captured as MJPEGs and are easily transferred to PC via SD cards.

Another interesting detail worth talking about is the functioning range. So, the Swann system offers a digital wireless transmission to a range of 65 feet, which is actually quite good, especially since the company claims that the level of interference with other wireless devices around the house (Internet routers, mobile phones and even microwave ovens) will be a minimal one.

Swann’s ADW-400 Digital Guardian Camera & Recorder has a MSRP of $249 U.S and will be available via the company's usual retail chain in the immediate future.

This unit is a considerable step up on the ill fated Red Alert unit that escaped the Swann labs some years back. Camera quality is improved although still not great and capture rate in frames per second is quite low, even in daylight. Still, it works, much to this reviewer's relief, having sworn off the company after our last disaster (red alert). Set up is a piece of cake and the menu system works well enough. The 2GB SD card should be big enough to capture motion for ages, but a larger SD card is recommended as the camera rocks slightly in the breeze setting the motion detection off. I suggest that in the next iteration of this unit Swann look to improving the quality of the cheap plastic mount. It would also be useful to be able to purchase additional cameras - the unit can cope with four - but you'll search in vain on the Swann web site and they just aren't stocked in the retail chains. Still, the concept is good and the implementation is better this time around. Swann are trying to get units out there so hunt around for some discount.
