Without a doubt, technology has done a lot for public safety, the development of modern surveillance devices making it a lot harder for criminals to get away with their evil ways. And one of the best examples of such a situation comes from the US (the state of Texas, to be exact), where a dangerous robber was caught with the help of a surveillance system designed specifically to be installed within vehicles.
Hence, a few days ago, police officers from Killeen, Texas, arrested a man who had threatened a cab driver at gun point and robbed him. The man was arrested based on a snapshot taken by a security event recorder installed within the respective taxi, namely the envisionCAM from Advanced EDR Systems.
In fact, the man was believed to be responsible for that crime, as well as three other robberies involving taxi cabs, and is currently being held in custody on $500,000 bond. According to the television station that aired the report (KCEN 9-Killeen), it encouraged other such businesses to install vehicle-mounted security cameras.
“It is very gratifying to see the envisionCAM help police apprehend someone who might do harm to taxi cab drivers,” said Daniel D’Agostino, President of Advanced EDR Systems, LLC. “While security cameras in taxis and other business vehicles promote safety, the envisionCAM also generates economic benefits for taxi fleet owners.”
In fact, the uses of such a system are quite extensive, ranging from personal and fleet security to the possibility of proving one's innocence in case of an accident and thus avoid any legal or insurance-related problems. Of course, installing such a system is not exactly cheap (one unit sells for around 625 US dollars), but the benefits might prove to be more important than the price one would have to pay for this thing.
