Next week, at that congregation of mobile gadgetry coolness known by the not-so-cool name of Mobile World Congress, a new mobile projection mini-module will be launched, this time, by a company called Explay.
Colibri is the name of the device and its manufacturer describes it as having the technology capable of providing a 70inch projection, whether it's VGA, SVGA and WVGA. This kind of projecting power is packed inside a teensy-weensy carcass measuring only 24 x 28.6 x 7mm. Of course, this Hobbit of Middle-Gadget-Earth doesn't need much food, not even those Elven cakes or whatever; all that it draws is a humble 1.3W.
With all these teeny-tiny features and numbers, no wonder that Explay talks about the Colibri as being the World's Not-Largest, Not-Power-Hungriest, Highest-for-Its-Size-Resolutionist. In spite of its dimensions, the device can throw a projected image as far as 20 to 200cm, and with a 10Lm brightness, too.
Apparently, Explay will use this Lilliputian gadget in its OiO mobile projector. This one will measure 50 x 100 x 14mm, so it's like a Hobbit who has been playing basketball since early childhood and has been on a steroid diet ever since. It will be able to amaze us with its projecting power for 2.5 hours at a time. The “Always Focus” function will bestow upon it the power of automatic focus control. Also, flat or curved, there is no surface on which this thing won't be able to project on – according to Explay.
The company's CEO, Daniel Oleiski, says (in the
press release announcing the Colibri) that “leading cellular manufactures and operators are already validating the Colibri for their next line of devices.” The matter will surely become clearer and less filled with Tolkien mythology next week, when the Mobile World Congress opens its gates.
