Although you already know that you have a busy weekend coming up, here is a gadget, which will make you want to change your plans. For the passionate, crafting MacGuyver type of fellows out there, the Monochron clock is going to be a challenge and an interesting toy for quite some time as it comes disassembled and lets you program its screen as you see fit. It can be ordered with a color screen as well, so don't look away because of the picture and this particular exemplary video.
Oops, I spoiled the surprise, nonetheless, nay-sayers might not be interested in this type of clock simply because one has to build it by themselves and does not come in the popular “table-ready” format that you see in all clocks. But the more imaginative and capable of a little bit of programming, tech gurus out there will probably appreciate the freedom of choice that the Monochron clock has to offer.
The kit comes with all parts, programmed chips and LCD and everything is completely open source (the hardware, the firmware and all other “-wares”). It has its own battery and enclosure and 9VDC power supply that will fit in both 220V and 110V sockets. It is quite the basic kit, so don't worry even if you haven't done some soldering never before in your life (and you consider yourself a grown-up). There is even a lot of room for modding, so it can be a challenge for all tech aficionados. The model in this video features the classic “Pong” game build, which is only one of the many, many examples of what you can do with this kit.
On the Adafruit blog, the $80 dollar Monochron Clock Kit is already sold out but soon, there will be a stock replenish happening. They will notify you by email if you are really interested in taking up three hours of your free time to build the clock you have always dreamed of, considering you have the few basic hand tools needed for the job, of course.
We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit. The address is .
