Shanxi Province in China has adopted a new technology for digital mapping, in accordance with FGII (Foundation Geographical Information Institute) standards. The whole region will be mapped using this new
technology for 3D spatial data collection.
Here is what Wu Boyi, deputy director of Shanxi FGII, had to say about the implementation of the IP-S2 solution, “Most of the detailed maps in our region (specified maps and analyzers) are available to licensed surveyors only, and the maps for general public often have incomplete information. We have an ambitious plan to create new web-based digital maps that provide the general citizen with additional values. For these goals, we were looking for the most effective surveying technologies and the IP-S2 was exactly the one we needed.”
This system is similar to the one used by the technicians who are working in developing the Google Street View service, or other similar services that are available throughout the world in present times. I am sure that most countries have their own online 3D mapping service until now. What is spectacular about the Topcon IP-S2 is that it is using around-the-corner sensing GNSS sensors. The 360-degree video camera is also aided by laser scanners and vehicle wheel encoders, for detailed and precise data gathering. The producers say that it is also a very fast system.
“The IP-S2 will provide an ideal solution to increase the data collection efficiency. It is our pleasure to be able to support the creator of new digital maps and geographical information databases that will certainly benefit the Chinese society,” stated Osamu Hoshida, Topcon Corporation’s special adviser for
mobile surveying and mapping technologies.
Wu Boyi also reveals that Shnaxi is probably the first region to use this technology in China. This means we will be able to make a virtual visit in Shanxi in the near
future.
