The guys who invented Scrabble made up their minds to create a 60'th anniversary Scrabble board, which is meant to be part of the most luxurious scrabble set ever made. The unique Diamond Anniversary Edition comes with a one of a kind glass board encrusted with approx. 30.000 Swarovski crystals. Building the board was a very time-consuming process, since each of the crystals was hand-picked in order to match the Scrabble's board original color theme.
Yeah, the whole idea of an unique Anniversary board is very romantic, but the problem is that some scrabble maniac actually bought the set. Derryn Hinch supposedly paid $30,000 for the entire Scrabble set and by the official remarks he seems proud of it: “It is valued at about $30,000 and I got it. This is the ultimate bling. It is my Christmas present to myself”.
Of course, the board was auctioned on eBay and most of the sum will be going to St Jude's Medical Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Hinch never actually stated how much he paid for the game set, but the team from the Herald Sun did manage to pull off one official statement in which Hinch states: "I did not pay $30,000 for it. I am not telling you what I did pay, but I paid a lot".
Derryn Hinch is considered one of the most renowned Scrabble experts and has written two books regarding the classic board game. I'd have to imagine that he must be the happiest man alive after receiving his Christmas gift, which by the way, cost him another $2,000 to ship to Melbourne, Australia. This is due to the set's heavy weight of approx. 150kg.
Hinch also told the reporters from the Herald Sun, joking on the subject: “I should have bought a car instead”. Too bad he only got the idea after spending a ton of cash on the game set.
