There are certain products out there that, despite being quite cool, are far from what you'd call “game-changing”, but there are also some that are nothing short of revolutionary, and as far as we're concerned, that's exactly the case with the miniCASTER, which has just been officially presented at the IBC show in Amsterdam.
According to its developer, miniCASTER enables everybody to stream live to the Web in HDTV quality, the
device encoding audio/video signals of a camcorder or a professional camera in realtime.
It can be hooked to the internet via LAN and soon via Wi-Fi and, for the use in the field, it can be linked to a 3G router or a satellite terminal.
The miniCASTER is compact, lightweight and truly mobile due to its very powerful on-board battery.
Quite naturally, the main selling point of the miniCASTER is the fact that it
encodes the audio/video signal of average camcorders or cameras in realtime, using the H.264 codec, favoured by companies like Apple, TV stations or online video platforms like Youtube.
Since the miniCASTER employs the aforementioned code, content produced by the miniCASTER can be consumed by PC users, using the Flash Player but also by users of mobile devices like iPhone and iPad.
The device uses the Content Delivery Network (CDN) of TV1.EU.
"miniCASTER(R) has the potential to start a small revolution, like YouTube did.
The World's most popular online
video platform made watching on demand videos popular - miniCASTER could be the breakthrough for live content,” said Michael Westphal, Co-Inventor of the device.
The entry model with analog inputs will be priced at approx. USD 1,300, while the SDI version comes at USD 1,999.
