Compared to some of the previous years, we haven't seen too many GPS personal navigation devices being announced at CES 2010, so that made by
TomTom is quite a welcome one, despite the fact that we're talking about an entry-level product.
The GPS device in question is called the TomTom Ease and sports a 3.5-inch LCD touch-screen display (320 x 240 pixel resolution, 64,000 colors), as well as 2GB of built-in flash memory. Furthermore, it's available in both black and white versions and features a sleek lightweight design and integrated EasyPort mount.
The
device is small, measuring 3.4 x 3.6x 1.2 inches and weighing around 6.1 ounces, including the mount. In fact, TomTom claims that the PND is so small that it allows drivers to easily fit the entire device and attached mount into a pocket, purse or small glove compartment.
The PND features TomTom’s improved EasyMenu user interface, which now offers a simple two-icon touchscreen menu that provides quick access to search tools so that users can get started on their destination even faster. It also comes pre-loaded with maps of the US from Tele Atlas, and even supports Text-to-Speech.
Additionally, the PND from TomTom offers IQ Routes Technology, which provides drivers with the fastest route any time of day with accurate travel times. Plus, it has TomTom Map Share and is designed with safety features so drivers always have direct access to extensive safety and roadside assistance information wherever they go.
“The TomTom EASE combines quality, simplicity and style into one compact device,” said Jocelyn Vigreux, president of TomTom Inc. “It’s an obvious choice for drivers who want an affordable, easy to use portable navigation device with the most innovative map and routing technologies available.”
The TomTom EASE will arrive in stores in early 2010 but, although TomTom calls it “
affordable,” it fails to point out an exact price point. Oh well, guess we'll have to wait and see.
