As some of you might remember, back in February, Toshiba revealed a very attractive new handset, built around one of the most advanced chips designed for the smartphone segment, namely Qualcomm's Snapdragon. And now, it seems that the respective device, which was back then called the
TG-01, has finally gone official in Japan, the NTT DoCoMo carrier deciding to adopt it from now on, renaming it the T-01A.
The first thing we have to notice about this new Toshiba handheld is the form factor, which is very thin and attractive. Hence, the T-01A measures 70 x 130 x 9.9 mm and weighs only around 130 grams, which is pretty good, given the fact that we're talking about a device running the Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional operating system.
So, leaving aside all the talk about design and other considerations, let's move on to the actual hardware configuration provided by Toshiba's fresh T-01A handset. Besides the aforementioned Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU (running at a maximum 1 GHz), the handheld will also feature 256 MB of SDRAM memory, plus an additional 512 MB of flash memory for storage purposes. However, since 512 MB is not enough for the needs of today's average user, the T-01A also packs a microSD card slot.
The device features a 4.1-inch touchscreen TFT LCD display, which provides an 800 x 480 pixel resolution and 65,536 colors. Plus, the built-in battery offers quite an extensive functioning life, namely 250 hours in 3G stand-by mode, around 180 hours in stand-by GSM mode, as well as around 210 minutes of 3G talk time, and 200 minutes of GSM talk time.
As mentioned right from the start, the T-01A is available for the time being just in Japan, but we certainly hope that it will prove its worth there and then move on to the western markets as well.
