While fuel cells are regarded by many people as the power-generating technology that is going to revolutionize the world as we know it, the truth of the matter is that these things are still pretty far from going mainstream, one of the main reasons being the fact that relatively few major names in the battery industry are openly supporting them. However, it really looks like things are about to take quite a dramatic turn for the better as far as
fuel cells are concerned, given the fact that Toshiba is about to get actively involved in this field, in a very public manner.
Hence, as Martyn Williams from the
IDG News Service informs us, it would seem that Toshiba's own president has quite recently let the proverbial cat out of the bag, announcing the whole world that the Japanese company might be rolling out some fuel-cell based chargers in the immediate future, namely in two months' time.
The external battery charger will employ DMFC (direct methanol
fuel cell) technology and will be portable enough to be easily carried around by users. The main advantage provided by this technology is the fact that it's much “greener” than traditional batteries, the only by-products resulting from its use being a small amount of water vapor and carbon dioxide.
Moreover, if these initial portable chargers prove to be successful enough, Toshiba is quite keen on expanding its offerings with several specialized types of
batteries, targeting mostly portable devices, such as mobile phones and various portable computing systems.
Of course, it remains to be seen just how successful these products will ultimately prove to be, simply because we're talking about some cutting-edge, high-end technology, which will certainly come at a pretty high price. And since the habit of early adoption has been somewhat hindered by the economic crisis, Toshiba might be faced with some important problems pushing these products onto the market.
