Although 2008 was one of the most difficult years in Toshiba's history, the Japanese company experiencing a rather nasty defeat at the hands of its rival Sony, it seems that it has really managed to pick itself up pretty good and will be presenting innovative products at this year's CES, especially in the field of home entertainment.
Probably the most impressive item Toshiba will display at CES will be a 56-inch, 4k x 2k pixel panel, which will be used in order to display images that the Cell platform upconverts from 1920x1080p to 3840x2160p. Furthermore, the same setup will be used for upconverting various types of content to high picture quality by the application of “Resolution+” technology in combination with newly developed noise reduction technologies.
And since we're on the subject of up-conversion technology, it's worth mentioning the fact that the company will also be demonstrating its XDE technology, which improves movie quality by first upconverting the images, and then applying a combination of video processing technologies, “detail enhancement,” “intelligent color” and “contrast enhancement,” all of which are meant to bring “near-HD” quality to DVDs.
Also in the field of home entertainment, Toshiba will demonstrate the REGZA LINK (HDMI-CEC) based on WirelessHD technology, a new type of interface capable of carrying out wireless transmissions of uncompressed HD video and audio data at speeds allowing devices to be positioned anywhere in a room.
These are only a few of the highly innovative technologies that Toshiba will be bringing to this year's CES. Others include various AV devices with built-in network players, a very interesting 3D, gesture-recognition based user interface and navigation system, mobile and storage technologies, several prototype mobile Internet devices and loads of other goodies, tackling pretty much every field of the consumer electronics market it's involved in.
