The staff over at the Elmley Prison in the UK had great reason to panic recently, as a remote controlled helicopter toy was seen flying over the jailhouse towards the prisoner's quarters, with a small, suspect cargo attached. It was originally believed that was a highly innovative method of smuggling drugs into the prison, but after detailed searches, nothing could be found.
Guards at Elmley Prison in Sheerness, Kent, spotted the remote control miniature aircraft flying over the walls of the jail and heading for the accommodation blocks one night after it was picked up by CCTV cameras. It had a small load beneath the fuselage, thought to contain drugs. The really suspect thing is that none of the guards seem to have reacted when they first saw the helicopter and try to stop it.
However, staff could not find any trace of either the helicopter or the package which it appeared to be carrying underneath it when they searched the Category C jail. “Using a mini-helicopter to get contraband into jails is unprecedented. When officers spotted it they nearly fell off their chairs,” a prison source told the Sun. “It could have been drugs or a mobile phone in the package. It is possible it was a dummy run,” the source added.
The prison service confirmed that the incident indeed took place but refused to give any further details. If they worry not to give out too much information and make it easier on others to try a stunt like this, they should relax, because it's highly likely that the people who already tried it will do it again and not fail the next time, if they actually failed this time, that is. Just be careful with the tech toys you buy your kids, they might accidentally pull out something like this.
