Trimble has just introduced an indoor mobile mapping solution, targeted at facility management. Taking advantage of innovative technologies, the given solution is capable of delivering fast and accurate maps that allow users to translate their environment directly into 2D and 3D models of structured interiors. The solution will provide building owners, facility managers, engineers and construction professionals a means to plan and manage assets more accurately for buildings and properties.

"The Trimble indoor mapping capability has been rigorously demonstrated in a variety of interior spaces, including apartment buildings, subways and shopping malls," said Peter Canter, director of Advanced Mapping Systems at Trimble's Applanix subsidiary. "In all of these environments, the system delivered exceptional results, both in accuracy and in ease-of-use. Equally as important is the integration with existing software and workflows."

As for now, the solutions for mapping indoor spaces are very time consuming, just thinking they all involve a tripod, laser and camera that need to be set up to capture measurements and images at various locations, equipment that needs to be moved and installed several times to capture all perspectives of a room. The new Trimble solution, on the other hand, provides a simple walk-through experience for covering a 360-degree footage of indoor space.

Even more, Geo-referenced spatial data gets captured accurately and quickly along with the mobile system moving through the building at walking speed. Since the solution integrates active and passive sensors, as well as an intuitive user workflow to allow for a true indoor Geographic Information System (GIS) capability, maps and models that cover thousands of square feet of indoor space can be created in minutes, thus whole buildings would only take a day.

Included in the main features, customers will enjoy the high-accuracy 2D and 3D maps, the reduced mapping time and, of course, the associated cost, the visual models that optimize the management of building resources, and the situational awareness through complete interior space mapping, as well as a quick and accurate map production.
