The iPhone is pretty much everywhere these days, and the same can be said about the absolutely huge number of accessories designed specifically for it that have managed to make their way onto the market lately. However, a device that can transform this smartphone into a computer peripheral seems a little bit far-fetched... or not?
Well, apparently, a designer called
Kyle A. Koch has had this exact idea, namely that of turning the iPhone into a peripheral, and not any type of peripheral, but a computer scanner. However, he hasn't used some sort of advanced, proprietary technology for this purpose, but a simple, ordinary idea: keep the iPhone perfectly still while taking a snapshot.
As Mr. Koch declares, the idea of building such an accessory came to him as a result of the need to copy class assignments. “I would frequently snap photos of class assignments printed on copy paper so I wouldn't have to worry about losing them. The documents normally came out pretty clear, but it was tough to keep still while taking the pictures,” the designer explains. Given this situation, “I set out to make something that would ensure clean, consistent pictures of documents taken with the iPhone,” he continues.
The finite product, which you can plainly see in the photo, measures somewhere around 15.5 x 9.5 x 15 inches, which is high enough for the iPhone's camera to take good quality shots. Additional options include engraving the customer's logo or name on the scanner arms or "bed."
Fortunately, this very interesting contraption is also very affordable, since it sells for somewhere around 16 bucks a pop, making it quite an interesting addition to one's collection of iPod accessories. Plus, one can purchase it from anywhere around the US and other parts of the world as well. Not Europe, though, but if there are enough requests, perhaps the designer will start shipping his device there too.
