PocketWizard is a wireless radio triggering system for off-camera lighting developed in the late 1990’s by LPA Design. It requires a transmitter electrically connected to the camera, usually mounted on the product's Hot Shoe to trigger a
remote receiver connected to a remote flash unit via a PC Cord. The earlier released PocketWizard also features a hotshoe to directly mount the flash onto.
If before the maker was only the best for the triggering reliability, it has taken everything to the next level and gone beyond TTL by far.
Not only does the gadget have radio controller for TTL exposure but also a feature allowing you to trick the camera's shutter into going way above the normal x-sync, called HyperSync. If you usually get the shutter in the frame by 1/320, using the HyperSync feature, you can go as short as 1/500 of a second without getting a leaf of the shutter in your frame.
What HyperSync actually does is triggering the flash tad before the
shutter opens in order to "catch" more light from the flash. HyperSync must be configured to ensure that the flashes are fired at the optimum time for your combination of flash and camera. The only way for that is trial and error. The only downside (or upside?) is that it's Canon-only.
I have heard a lot of people from the UK complaining they can't reach that far to get these splendid PocketWizards. Fear no more, my lads and lassies, the PocketWizard FlexTT5 transceiver and MiniTT1 transmitter just launched in the UK. Pricing says an MSRP of $347 for the MiniTT1, whilst the FlexTT5 will reach $382.
