One of the fairly widely-encountered Sci-Fi movie clichés, at least as far as cars are concerned, is that the vehicles of the future will provide a comprehensive range of navigation solutions, which will display the instructions right of the windshield (when they're not driving themselves, that is). However, mainstream car manufacturers are far from having adopted such solutions, so we're only left with third-party products, such as the one you'll read about as follows, made by a Taiwan-based company called Springteq.

The device in question, WeGo HUD, integrates a normal GPS navigator, but also a projector, used for outputting navigation data directly onto one's windshield. Don't expect any miracles here, though, since the projecting capabilities are not exactly fantastic (we're only talking about 400 x 240 pixels resolution, 500:1 contrast ratio and a 4.5-inch image size).

Naturally, one of the biggest concerns about such a product is related directly to its visibility, but the manufacturer claims that the 13,000 cd/m2 brightness level should prove to be quite enough, even in the sunniest days. Furthermore, an optical sensor will automatically adjust brightness based on the ambient light, while the unit’s reflective image display technology eliminates the need to adjust focus.

Additionally, one should not expect any miracles from the navigation unit itself, which is a pretty basic device running Windows CE and featuring a 2GB on-board flash module, accompanied by an SDHC memory card slot. No word on the navigation software of choice, but given the overall configuration of the WeGO HUD solution, it's likely that it supports multiple such software applications.

Unfortunately, Springteq has not provided any pricing or availability information, and that's simply because it's still looking for partners to help them actually market this product. So, sadly, it's very likely that we'll have to wait a while longer before seeing these products arrive in stores, but we certainly hope they will see the light of day, eventually.
