It sure has been a while since I was really impressed with an operating system. Ever since Windows 98 was first launched, I've searched high and low to find the same thrill but didn't any. Well until Windows 7, that is. As you pretty much know by now, Windows 7 is the latest and probably best creation that Microsoft's made in terms of OSes. And it seems that ever since its launch, it has already surpassed Vista in terms of sales.

According to market research company NPD, Windows 7 software units in the U.S. saw a growth of 234 percent in sale when compared to the first days that Vista spent on shelves. “Microsoft’s program of early low-cost pre-sales, high visibility marketing, and aggressive deals helped make the Windows 7 software launch successful,” said Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD. “In a slow environment for packaged software Windows 7 brought a large number of customers into the software aisles.”

According to the survey, Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade SKU, worth 76USD, has been the best selling Windows 7 SKU, with Windows 7 Pro Upgrade (147 USD) and Windows 7 Home Premium Family Pack 3 User Upgrade (149 USD) being situated on the second and third place.

I'll leave you with another insightful comment from the same Stephen Baker, “A combination of factors impacted Windows 7 PC sales at the outset, but the trajectory of overall PC sales is very strong leading into the holiday season. […] Vista had a slight advantage at launch, as January traditionally has a bigger sales footprint than October. The other hurdle Windows 7 faced was sales of PCs with older operating systems (XP and Vista) were high, making up 20 percent of sales during the Windows 7 launch, compared to just 6 percent of older operating sales during Vista’s launch week.”
