Bikes are fast catching up with the inventions in technology and we often see bikes that do much more than just help people get from one place to another. And today we have a stunning example of how technology can change the overall design and features of the innocent-looking bicycles. BERU f1systems has developed the zero-emission Factor 001, which is being touted to be the world’s most advanced bike.
The £20,000 bike will be fully revealed next week at the launch of the U.K. Science Museum’s free exhibition “Fast Forward: 20 ways F1 is changing our world,” being praised by its manufacturer as a ground-breaking training tool that could change the way athletes and serious enthusiasts undertake fitness training.
Factor 001 is the result of a creative project to explore the transfer of design approaches, technology and materials from Formula 1 (where BERU f1systems is a supplier of various components, such as electronics and composites to every team) to mankind’s most enduring invention.
Weighing less than 7kg, the carbon fiber bike is designed with powerful modeling and analysis software used to build Formula 1 race cars. The features that make the bike the most advanced one in the world are on-board systems including systems to monitor ergonometric, biometric, physical force and environmental data. The information is then relayed to an on-board computer for the rider to analyze their performance.
All the necessary wiring and the batteries are well concealed in the carbon fiber frame, making the bike look like any ordinary bicycle on the outside. To keep the rider and the bike safe, the design team has incorporated ceramic brakes to provide exact braking performance at any temperature.
“I am very pleased that what started as a ‘clean sheet’ design exercise to showcase our expertise in composites and electronics has delivered such a beautifully styled, scientific training device,” said John Bailey, managing director of BERU f1systems. “Athletes and their trainers now have access to performance enhancement capabilities that are the norm in top-level motorsport, and individuals interested in an exclusive, high end, differentiated bicycle now have a serious alternative,” he added.
