I don't know about you, but I really have a soft spot for
modders, not because I've done any modding myself, but simply because one has really got to admire these people, who spend a lot of their time (and probably hard-earned money) in order to tweak and modify certain products, altering both their external design and, in some cases, their level of functionality as well. And that's also the case with the iMac CS mod you'll read about as follows, since this thing's functionality has been seriously enhanced, without completely removing its basic purpose.
The iMac CS is the work of a very talented modder known as
kiwidee, who's been tweaking and changing all sorts of stuff from the early 70's on. And for this particular project, he's chosen an old iMac
model, whose rather bulky form factor provides plenty of space for inserting other stuff.
First of all, it's important to mention that kiwidee wanted to make out of the iMac CS a fully-functional Mac system, but also to add some extras to it. For this reason, he took out the original
hardware components of the iMac, and replaced them all with a Mac mini (no alterations done whatsoever). However, since the mini is a pretty small product, there was plenty of room left, so he decided to throw in some other cool stuff.
So, he replaced the original display with a WMF1 pad-coffeemaker that works with standard pads (7cm), heating up and brewing in barely one minute. Then, since there was still room to spare, he also added a JBL Spot subwoofer, which, combined with the iMac's own built-in speakers, turns this mod into a very interesting iPod speaker system.
Of course, all the connectors and buttons existing on the original iMac have been wired to the new components, which means that starting up the device and working with it should be pretty familiar for all iMac users. Connecting an audio source to it should be pretty cool and easy to do too.
The best part is that kiwidee is also willing to replicate this mod on demand, so if you've got an old iMac laying around the house and some cash on the side, you can always contact him.
We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there.
